Chapter Eleven

Max held Jamie as they slept, his brain unable to shut down. They needed to strike now, while the Amity Brethren wasn’t expecting them. Close to four in the morning, he left his tent, hating leaving Jamie alone, but he needed to talk to the commanding officer, Colonel Benson.

He went to the mess tent and grabbed two coffees before heading over to see the colonel. The light was shining in the officer’s quarters, so he knocked on the door which was swung open by a young man who he didn’t recognize.

“I need to see Colonel Benson.”

The guy lifted his brows and smirked like Max didn’t belong. “And who are you?”

“I’m Lieutenant Max Gaines.” Anger surged, not at this guy, but at the system that allowed Jamie's capture in the first place.

“Gaines, get your ass in here,” Benson barked.

Max nodded to the young man who was playing guard, and probably butler too, and stepped into Benson’s tent. It was better than anything he’d seen on base so far, but the colonel was the ranking officer here.

“You messed it up real good, Gaines.” Benson’s uniform had no wrinkles, and he looked fresh as a daisy. Max felt and looked like a truck had rolled over him.

“We have fifteen of our people back on the right side.”

Benson huffed. “Your people is right.”

Max’s muscles tightened. “What does that mean?”

“We aren’t here to cater to your kind. You disobeyed a direct order, and while Major Rowe might be willing to overlook that, I’m not.”

The hair on the back of his neck rose, and if it had been one hundred years ago, he probably would have ripped his way through Benson’s neck, killing him on the spot. That type of racism prevented cooperation and brought forth hate that had strained the relationships between human and shifter almost to the breaking point. “With all due respect, sir, my kind has saved the asses of thousands of soldiers because we can go where you can’t.”

“Be that as it may, Lieutenant. You defied a commanding officer’s explicit commands when you went off to rescue your friend and fellow shifters. While it’s an admirable thing, the Army can’t have soldiers running off willy-nilly when they feel like it.” He paused and stared hard at Max. “Until further notice, you are confined to your quarters.”

Max knew he deserved the reprimand, but because Benson was human, he didn’t understand the drive Max had to save his mate.

“God dammit,” Benson grunted and then wiped his palm over his face. “Look, son, I understand you didn’t want to leave those men behind. But there will be consequences to your actions.”

Max stood at attention and replied, “Yes, sir.”

“At ease, soldier. As this unit’s intel officer, there’s new information about the Brethren.”

Max’s heart jumped in his chest.

Benson continued, “We thought we knew where the Amity Brethren were after you stormed the base. We sent a Ranger team in after you left and the Brethren are gone.”

Max absorbed the information, a tingle of guilt shifting through him.
